mo' gizmo

michael arcega posts, reuben margolin nebula parts,

summer of gizmo

pedestals? check. somethinglike 450 of them-- in a variety of convoluted shapes and dimensions. (10 feet? reeally???). i'm spending a few months this summer doing carpentry fabrication for gizmo art production (www.gizmosf.com). while pedestals may not be the most exciting things to make, the company does fabricate some very awesome public art commissions. for instance, currently a different crew of folks is working on a GIGANTIC kinetic sculpture by reuben margolin--one of my most favorite, favorite artists. and earlier in the summer gizmo finished and installed some snappy public street posts by artist michael arcega on valencia st. in SF.

Internship at Ted Boerner Furniture

For the past 8 months I've been interning 1-2 days/week at Ted Boerner furniture design. I am so grateful this experience. I've gained valuable drafting and design skills and Ted, Kathy Lam, and Karla Ramirez have been awesome people to work with. I helped on a variety of projects, the largest of which has been the design and prototyping of a 'panel cabinet' program that will be made of steel, wood and different varieties of customizable glass panels. Ted's inspiration for these cabinets came from the glazed windows on so many old industrial warehouses, where over time some window panes have been replaced and are mismatched-- some painted, some safety glass, some wooden boards, etc. The first prototype is being fabricated by Chris French Metal in Oakland. I can't wait to see pictures of it! I will post them if I can.
As an intern I also designed a wall of boxes/bookshelves for a client (design below), helped draft many custom furniture orders, worked collaboratively on other project designs, and did material and manufacturing research. (Check out www.carvart.com for some seriously cool glass products!) I also processed a lot of upholstery fabric and leather (paperwork!). I had to end my internship sooner than expected as I found a job working for Gizmo Art Production for the summer. I couldn't pass up this opportunity but I definitely miss my Tuesdays with Ted, Kathy, Karla, and Nemo (Ted's little rascal dachshund).
